What Is AS/NZS 5328?

It was developed in collaboration with Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA), Standards Australia, and water utilities across the region, and it’s based on real-world testing that simulates home plumbing and wastewater treatment systems.
Before this standard, many wipes labeled as “flushable” caused blockages in household pipes and municipal sewers because they didn’t break down properly. To combat this, AS/NZS 5328 was introduced to bring accountability and consistency to flushability claims. Products must pass a series of rigorous disintegration, drainage, and settling tests under controlled conditions that reflect real infrastructure.
The standard is maintained and reviewed by Standards Australia and Standards New Zealand, in consultation with engineers, utilities, and consumer product experts. It reflects both environmental and plumbing performance, ensuring that certified products are safe for households, sewer systems, and marine environments.
